Sushi Night

Living in Portland OR I'm fortunate to be exposed to different cousins and food from many different nations, with having such a large variety of food I have acquired a taste for sushi, and to my joy all my family and lots of friends love sushi. So it was only time until I started making sushi at home, and that day came few days back. My first challenge was that I had nothing at home that I could make sushi with so I went out and spend $150 so i could make sushi, I guess it might have been cheaper for me to go to a restaurant, but I would not have the experience of making sushi.

My shopping list included the following.

Bamboo mat.
Chop sticks.
Sticky rice.
Seaweed.
Cream Cheese.
Fish Roy
Cucumbers.
Crab meat.
Avocado.
Soft shell crab.
Shrimp.
Tuna 1st grade.
Wasabi.
Ginger.

I hope I did not miss anything but now you can see why I spend $150.00, I must say though that I had lots of stuff left over, the soft shell crab came in a box of 12 and I only used 4, I still have 1/2 of the shrimp, and 1/2 of the tuna in the freezer, plus the sushi that I did make fed 6 adults and 9 kids. So I guess it wasn't to bad after all.

Some of the sushi I made were variations of California rolls, shrimp tempura rolls, Spider roll and other that I just stuffed with ingredients. Over all it was lots of fun and I learned how to make sushi, with the left over crab imitation and cucumbers my family enjoyed 2 more meals of sushi after that, and I still have stuff in my freezer and refer that I can make more sushi. My conclusion is that it's an easy fun process and the sushi cost much less when you make it at home. I hope in the next few post I can write more about how I make it and give some insights on how to make great sushi.

I got the soft shell crab at Powel Seafood, they sell them in a case of 12 for $24, and there tiny, I used 1 crab cut in half for 1 roll.
