Summer is here and all of us are ready to catch some sun, we have heard much about sunscreen and how we need to use it on hourly bases, but not much has bin taught to us about the affect of the sunscreen on our health. Many studies have shown that using lots of sunscreen can actually bring you harm do to the chemicals that are used in them, there are many estrogenic chemicals that can affect the levels of estrogen in your body. Although the levels of estrogenic in sunscreen is minimal and they alone are not harmful but if we combine them with all the other that we consume it actually can pose a problem, it was found that even meat that was processed with hormones has some estrogen in it. Plus we have all the chemicals and creams that we use, when you combine all of them together we can see how even minimal amounts can have health implication for us.
What to watch for
Vigilance is the main thing we can do, and avoiding those sunscreens that have estrogenics, here is a list of different chemicals that process estrogenic affects.
- Benzophenone-1, 2, 3 and 4 (also known as Oxybenzone). Oxybenzone is of most concern as it is not only associated with hormone disruption but also with allergies and cell damage. In fact, a 2008 study by the Center for Disease Control revealed that 97% of Americans are contaminated with this chemical. It also links mothers with high levels to giving birth to low birth weight infants increasing their risk for coronary heart disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and other diseases in adulthood
- Octyl methoxycinnamate (Octinoxate)
- 4-Methylbenzylidene camphor UV-B 4-MBC, Eusolex 6300
